Cushion Styling Tips to Make Your Home Cosy and Festive This Christmas

The holiday season is the time of year that the more public areas of our home really get lived in the most and enjoyed by ourselves and our guests! The lounge and dining areas are the most common projects we aim to have completed over the winter time as during the colder months, we tend to spend our leisure time and do our entertaining in these parts of the home. Having family and friends over for Christmas and New Years – or just for a cosy Sunday roast – it’s important that the living areas are given some love! A great, easy and relatively inexpensive way to do this is to focus on cushions. They’re also great as Christmas gift ideas as they can work wonders on a lounge set or armchair, but also on a bedroom! As Christmas approaches, it’s time to bring a little extra warmth and cheer into your home by styling your cushions.

Christmassy interiors are all about embracing those rich, festive colors that evoke the warmth and joy of the season. Think deep reds, forest greens, dark blues, and crisp whites. If you’re someone who loves a traditional Christmas look, go for cushions in plaid or tartan patterns. For a modern twist, mix in some metallics like gold or silver – or even the trendy black leather cushion pictured below – these can add a touch of glamour without overwhelming your space.

Tip: Don’t be afraid to mix and match different shades of red and blue – contrasting colors. A dark burgundy cushion paired with a deep blue can add depth and interest to your sofa – see below!

Texture is key when it comes to creating a cosy atmosphere during the winter months. Look for cushions in plush fabrics like velvet, faux fur, or chunky knits. These materials not only add warmth but also create a tactile experience that invites you to sink in and relax. Layering different textures can make your space feel more dynamic and inviting.

Tip: Pair a velvet cushion with a faux fur throw pillow for a luxe look that’s perfect for Christmas. Or, as above, mix an aztec semi-velour patterned cushion with a smooth linen one to create an interesting contrast.

When styling cushions, variety is your friend. Mixing different sizes and shapes creates visual interest and can make your seating areas feel more dynamic. Start with larger square cushions as your base, then layer in smaller square or rectangular ones. Adding a round cushion or a lumbar pillow can break up the lines and add a unique touch to your arrangement.

Tip: Place a large square cushion in each corner of your sofa, then add a smaller, rectangular cushion in front of them. You could even finsih off with a round cushion in the center to pull the look together.

If you’re someone who prefers a more minimalist approach, neutrals are your best friend. Opt for cushions in shades of cream, beige, or muted burgundy. These colors can provide a calming backdrop to the hustle and bustle of the season. To keep it festive, add cushions with subtle textures or metallic accents. Like the below muted burgundy cushions with the darker trim!

Tip: A neutral palette doesn’t have to be boring. Mix different textures – like a linen cushion paired with a wool one – to create a cosy, layered look that feels just as festive as traditional Christmas colours.

Cushions are a great way to create a focal point in your room. If you have a neutral sofa, consider using cushions in bold, festive colors to draw the eye. Alternatively, if your sofa is already a statement piece, opt for cushions in more subdued tones to complement rather than compete with it.

Tip: Arrange your cushions symmetrically on either side of the sofa for a balanced look, or go for an asymmetrical arrangement if you prefer a more relaxed, eclectic vibe.

If you have kids, involve them in the cushion styling process. Let them choose a cushion or two to add to the mix – it’s a fun way to make them feel included in the holiday preparations. Cushions are also great accessories for kids bedrooms as they are easily replaceable and so we can afford for them to have fairly short shelf lives. Kids grow up and change so fast that it’s hard to see more stable decor in their rooms as investments. Let them express themselves with their cushion choices!

Nothing beats that feeling of crawling into bed after a long and tiring day. Especially in the cold winter months. Arranging an abundance of pillows and cushions on your bed can make that feeling of getting into bed even more of a treat. Creating a luxurious bedroom experience is as easy as arranging layer upon layer of plush pillows!
