Mother’s Day – flowers spotlight
Who doesn’t like receiving flowers? A good friend of mine always says that flowers given with love last longer, and I always think about that when floral gifts I give or receive go longer without wilting than science would have us expect. Perhaps it is the plant food sachets that most bouquets come equipped with, or perhaps the way we lovingly trim the stalks to fit perfectly in our favourite vase. Either way, with Mother’s Day around the corner it’s time to consider the best type of flowers to go in a room. Flowers can be more than a just a superficial addition but can really pick up on the colour palette of a room in a more structural sense – so choose carefully!

In this example, the monochromatic kitchen foundations are brightened unexpectedly by bursts of yellow – this theme is picked up by both the flowers on the right hand side and the fruit bowl with lemons and a melon.
Elsewhere in this house, the yellow theme is picked up in the velour footrest and a couple of the assorted pillows arranged on the sofa, as well as a few yellow stems in this bouquet atop a mauve table:

In some cases when the room already has a busy colour scheme, it can be nice to opt for a simple green cactus or fern. For example, the below succulent fits nicely within the clean edges of this rectangular wooden coffee table, and picks up the green of the geometric shape in the carpet below it. Here it is not just the colour but also the shape of the leaves that provides an interesting natural example of geometric repeated patterns – in the room as a whole but specifically with the tray on which it is displayed.

Here, a bouquet of pink roses picks up the pink theme that is engaged by the book and candles on the coffee table, adding some color to this otherwise muted colour palette. The artwork is also colourful which allows the room to be bright in local moments rather than in larger structural features. This means that the colours are easier to alter and switch up, if you’re prone to feeling like a change!

Elsewhere in the same house, this room has a globe vase with classic white roses as its centerpiece. The rectangular shelving unit with its clear straight lines is balanced by the rounded arms of the chairs and other spherical moments, such as the two circular coffee tables, the five light bulb fixtures and the central golden vase.

Here, these delicately arranged three tulips have a whimsical arch which maps onto the sloping curve of the armchair. The white colour fits nicely with the cream-coloured furniture and desk installation, and makes for a still, peaceful moment of life in this minimal workspace.
As you can see, Mother’s Day can be a great excuse to spoil your mother with the perfect bouquet of flowers. When choosing the right bunch, bear in mind the colour palette of the room it will go in as well as the shape of the petals or leaves. As we have seen, a well-chosen bouquet of flowers can be a surprisingly easy way to make a huge difference to a room!
