Over the years, I have designed studio apartments for bachelors and bachelorettes who are busy working a 12-hour day. The main request they have is to return to a lovely cosy home. In many cases, the amount of hours they spend at work leads them to believe that it doesn't justify spending money on their home. However, once their space has been redesigned and their house now feels like a home, there are no regrets.
Nothing is more important than to have your dream home, even if it's a small studio apartment in the city. More and more people choose to live in the big megalopolis to spend less time in commuting to work. As a result, the options are fewer, and on the whole, are smaller in size.
Today I am going to inspire you with suggestions on how to utilize a small space in the best possible way and to make it fresh, modern, functional and most importantly, become your dream home.
ENTRANCE: This is an essential part of your home. This is very much the same idea of when going on a first date or for a job interview. You have a few seconds to blow someone away. This same concept applies to the entrance of your home.
The look and feel need to be one of harmony. According to Feng-Shui theory, the key is to keep the entrance as clear as possible so that the Qi can collect there. No clutter. Something that is simple and doesn't take up too much room. However, the front door needs to be able to open fully, so make sure nothing restricts its opening from behind the door.
What's more, hallways are usually long, narrow, poorly lit spaces that need all the help they can get to shine. So why not liven up this crucial space with hallway paint ideas.
I would also suggest experimenting with wallpaper. There are so many incredible wallpapers that do not cost a bomb. Make an impact and do not be scared.
STORAGE: This is a very sensitive topic to us all. Even to people who live in larger homes. There is never enough storage, right?
So let's begin with smart ways to create more storage.
Coffee tables can be used as storage. Pouffe on castor wheels can be built so that they open up for storage and can be wheeled around to make more space in the room. They can be used as a coffee table or a footstool and even a spare seat. Now, who would have thought you can achieve so much with one piece of furniture, right?
BEDROOM: sexy, calm and cool is the brief that I get the most. A space that is calm and relaxing and where anyone would be happy to come back with a date or a partner. It is a space where one can hang out and enjoy spending the whole day reading, chatting and relaxing.
Now, these rooms most of the time are quite small and poky, so how do you transform a stark uninviting space into a sexy and cool room.
Very easily, actually.
How about covering one wall with a vintage mirror. The mirror will come with a tint of dark colour which brings a sexy mood into the space. Paint a wall in a darker colour or wallpaper with a beautiful textured fabric feel that has a darker shade.
Another idea is to have beautiful curtains with matching cushions for the bed. Now, who doesn't like a bit of matchy matchy:-) I most definitely do.
DE-CLUTTE: I would like to talk about one more sensitive topic. De-cluttering. I don't know if it is a phenomenon of the 21st century. One thing for sure is that having a hoarding problem is really hard to get rid of.
One of the fastest growing professions is people who specialize in de-cluttering. Over the years, I have worked with wonderful ladies who will very gently and quickly help you throw out all the things that you really do not use any more and do not need.
Once you get your home de-cluttered you will feel that a weight has been lifted off your shoulders and your home will look just the way you have dreamed of -a fresh, airy, modern and cool home to come back home to after a very long day at work.
Signing out for today. Have a good one!
