HOW CAN I MAKE MY TEENAGE BEDROOM LOOK GOOD?
Recently, I’ve been stopped on the school run to ask if I can give tips on how to refresh children’s bedrooms. Now, these children are at secondary school their rooms are ready for a makeover. Parents need ideas for teenage bedrooms. Teenagers these days are always on their phones, and they all know what they like. The problem is it never seems to fit the budget of the parents!
I remember when I became a teenager, I went shopping with my mum looking for the perfect fabrics to make lovely curtains. It was fun finding quirky accessories and a cool bedside table with a fun bed sidelight. I was so happy to feel so grown up as the curtains were installed. I even made a bedspread out of the leftover fabrics. However, this was in the ’90s, and things were different back then.
Now, teenagers don’t really need to leave their rooms to know what they want, right? With Instagram, Pinterest as well as magazines… the list goes on, inspiration and ideas for teenage bedrooms are right at their fingertips. In this blog, I’m sharing a few simple ideas which will help you design a cool room for your loved ones
DESIGN A SPACE TO STUDY
Let’s start with desk space. This is an absolute must-have for any room right? I love to find a coloured desk to add a pop of colour and lots of character to the room.
DESIGN A SPACE TO RELAX
A reading corner or a reading chair if the room isn’t too small. I would recommend trying a chair in-store before buying it as everyone loves a great cosy chair. It may even encourage them to get stuck into a good book and help with their reading
COLOUR IDEAS FOR TEENAGE BEDROOMS
Lots of parents ask me what the latest colour trends are. As well as this they want to know what colours they should use in their children’s room. Well, firstly let me tell you about a colour you definitely shouldn’t use and that is Grey.
There is a good reason for this. Using a shade of grey in your child’s bedroom saps away the light. The natural light that we get here in England has more dull tones of grey in it. Grey is also a colour that you don’t find in nature. So by adding more grey into your children’s room, it can drain them of energy create more mood swings. Children need exactly the opposite of this. Ask them what colours they like and try and find a bright tone that will make them happy and keep the mood positive
If you have enough wall space create an area for a pinboard so they can pin their selfie pictures and all their reminders and note. Not only does this keep messy pictures all in one place but it also saves damage to your walls
If possible keep a large space on the wall that they can use as a mind map. Mind maps are a great way to explore ideas and make plans. Likewise, the older they get, the larger space they’ll need for their Mind Map
CHOOSING A BED
Beds are an expensive item to buy. The way I like to look at beds is to buy children a double bed without a headboard so they can grow into it. I also like to design my own lovely headboards.
I use the fabrics I buy at curtain outlet shops. They have a great selection of simple cotton or linen fabrics and all for an amazing price. All local upholsterers can make headboards which they will install too. There’s such a variety of designs that you can choose to make. If you buy a reasonable bed from Ikea for example and add a beautiful headboard it will look really beautiful and elegant. Getting a bed that has storage underneath is useful too. You can never have too much storage and it helps
I hope this gives you some inspiration on how to tackle the next stage of your children’s bedroom. Don’t be afraid to ask their opinion and work with your kids on the design of their room. It could be a bonding experience for all of you
